Stolen Vehicle – Arrest: R17-74387
On September 15, 2017, at approximately 3:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service were conducting traffic enforcement in a school zone on McDermot Avenue at Lydia Street when a truck was observed to be speeding.
As police attempted to pull over the vehicle, it turned northbound on Kate Street and attempted to flee the area at a high rate of speed. There was no police pursuit.
The vehicle failed to stop for stop signs at both Bannatyne Avenue and William Avenue, at which time it struck a sedan that had been traveling eastbound. The occupants, a mother and her teenage son, were later transported to hospital for precautionary reasons.
The suspect male driver fled on foot; however he was tracked by members of the K9 unit and placed under arrest between two buildings in the 500 block of William Avenue.
It has been determined that the truck had been stolen during the early morning hours of September 14 from the 900 block of Lipton Street.
A 16-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000
- Fail to Comply with Sentence (x2)
- Highway Traffic Act - Speeding
- Highway Traffic Act - Disobey traffic control device (x2)
He was detained in custody.
Commercial Robberies – Arrest: C17-207945
On September 14, 2017, at approximately 2 p.m., a suspect male entered a convenience store in the 400 block of Springfield Road while concealing his identity. The male pointed a firearm at an employee and jumped the counter, opening the cash register and obtaining an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the store.
On September 15, 2017, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a suspect male entered at a convenience store in the 400 block of Edison Street while concealing his identity. The male approached an employee and made a demand for money at which time a number of customers in the store apprehended the suspect and held him for police.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.
A 15-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- Robbery
- Armed Robbery using a Firearm
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Disguise with Intent (x2)
- Fail to Comply Condition Undertaking by Judge/Justice (x3)
He was detained in custody.
Reminder – Fraud Warning – Home Furnace Inspection Scam
The Winnipeg Police Services continues to receive numerous complaints from homeowners concerning aggressive and potentially fraudulent sales practices for home heating systems.
A common theme is that a salesperson or salespeople will approach residences and may be carrying uniforms with corporate logos and/or business identification. These individuals will then state they are performing furnace inspections or wish to check the operating status of the homeowner's heating system. This often results in them attempting to gain access to the residence.
Neither private companies, nor their employees, have any legal authority to enter a home to perform furnace inspections. These individuals are salespeople whose ultimate goal is to entice residents to make purchases of home heating products.
There have been reports of these individuals claiming to be associates or employees with Manitoba Hydro.
While Manitoba Hydro staff will go door-to-door for a number of reasons, they carry official Manitoba Hydro identification with their name and photo and will not pressure homeowners to gain entry, even for inspections.
The public is reminded that they can deny entry to any individual that seems suspicious, and are asked to call the police non-emergency number at 204-986-6222 if they require information from the Winnipeg Police Service.
