Independent Investigation Unit Notification

The Winnipeg Police Service has made a notification to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) regarding an in-custody death which occurred on August 13, 2017.

On August 9th, officers arrested a male following a foot pursuit.  Use of force was utilized during this arrest.  The arrested male complained of soreness to his mid-section and was transported to hospital, where he was medically cleared.  The man was then charged with weapons offences and assaulting a peace officer.  He was detained in custody at the Provincial Remand Centre.

On August 13th, the WPS was advised by the Medical Examiner's Office that he died while in custody.  An autopsy was conducted on August 16th.  The IIU was notified, and that unit assumed investigative responsibility for the death due to the involvement of WPS members.

The Winnipeg Police Service asks that any further questions be directed to the Independent Investigation Unit.
