Homicide Investigation Update – Arrest - C15-151436
As previously released, on July 20, 2015 at approximately 7:30 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a residence located in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue regarding a fire.
 
Once the fire was extinguished, further examination revealed a deceased male within the home, later identified as Justin Harvey CHEZICK, 42 years of Winnipeg.
 
Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation and identified a suspect in the incident. Attempts to locate the suspect were unsuccessful and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
 
On July 27, 2015, Romeo RYLE turned himself into police.  He has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Arson to Property for his alleged involvement.
 
RYLE has been detained in custody.


Commercial Robbery – Arrests - C15-156389
On July 27, 2015 at approximately 1:27 a.m. two suspects attended to a convenience store in the 300 block of Henderson Highway. With their faces concealed, one suspect pried open the locked front doors and entered the store. The lone clerk fled to a rear office and the suspects fled the premises with a large quantity of cigarettes.
 
During the occurrence passing witnesses had observed the suspects and flagged down a passing Winnipeg Police Service Street Crime Unit. Police were able to arrest the suspects without incident.
 
Jason David PYPER, 39 years and Samantha Darlene DESMARAIS, 24 years, both of Winnipeg, were arrested and detained in custody.
 
An investigation by the Winnipeg Police Major Crimes Unit lead to PYPER being charged as an alleged suspect in 10 other commercial robberies or attempts:
 

  • June 10, 2015, gas bar in the 400 block of Academy Road
  • June 11, gas bar in the 1800 block of Portage Avenue (attempt)
  • June 11, gas bar in the 3500 block of Roblin Boulevard (attempt)
  • June 11, gas bar in the 400 block of Academy Road
  • June 11, convenience store in the 1800 block of Wellington Avenue
  • June 15, gas bar in the 1300 block of McPhillips Street
  • June 19, convenience store in the 300 block of Henderson Highway
  • June 21, convenience store in the 300 block of Henderson Highway
  • July 3, convenience store in the 300 block of Henderson Highway
  • July 5, convenience store in the 300 block of Henderson Highway

 
PYPER has been charged with:

  • Robbery x 11
  • Disguise with Intent x 11
  • Possess Weapon x 2
  • Mischief Under x 2

 
DESMARAIS has been charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Disguise with Intent

 
Both accused were detained in custody.
 
 
Sexual Assault - C15-156633
On July 27, 2015 at approximately 10:30 a.m. a female youth, accompanied by her mother was in the vicinity of McGregor Street and Pritchard Avenue.  While the two were walking on the sidewalk a male passing on a bicycle reached out and sexually assaulted the youth. The victim was not injured in the assault.
 
The suspect is described as: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 14 to 18 years old, medium build, shoulder length straight hair, clean shaven wearing a black t-shirt and dark blue jeans. He was riding a BMX-style bicycle, silver in colour.
