POINT OF SALE TERIMINAL- FRAUD ADVISORY

Today, the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit was notified that suspects responsible for Point of Sale Terminal frauds may be destined for the Winnipeg.  Similar fraud incidents have occurred in Brandon, Manitoba, as well as in some cities in Saskatchewan.

In previous incidents, the suspects attended to restaurants that have wireless portable debit terminals, and as the employee is distracted, the suspects swap out the original machine and replace it with a terminal that was stolen from another restaurant.  Then the suspect(s) use the Point of Sale terminal to credit back funds onto either debit cards, or credit cards.

The suspects are described as follows:

#1)  Male, Caucasian, approximately 50 to 60 years of age, dishevelled looking with salt and pepper hair and missing teeth.

#2) Male, East Indian or Asian, approximately 30 years of age.

An assoicated vehicle is described as a 2000 Dodge Caravan with British Columbia license plates.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind businesses to conduct regular integrity checks of their point of sale PIN Pads and to be cognisant as to the placement of these devices.  Keeping point of sale devices secured and out of sight behind the counter when they not in use, is necessary to combat this type of crime.

In the event that a PIN pad has been "switched" or stolen immediately advise your service provider and notify police.

Anyone who may have any information regarding these incidents or the suspect(s) is asked to call investigators at (204) 986-6231 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
