2012 - LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) is internationally celebrating its 31st anniversary in 2012, for Special Olympics.  LETR is the movement's largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle. Globally in 2011, the Torch Run raised over $42 million for Special Olympics programs. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers carried the Flame of Hope across 35 nations, raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics.

Here in Manitoba, the Torch Run takes place on Thursday, May 31, 2012. The Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement officials will start the run at 5:30 p.m., being from the Scotia Bank Main Stage at the Forks, through the downtown and Saint Boniface for seven kilometers. Traffic delays are possible.

The Scotiabank has been a formidable partner in this effort as their entire branch network has supported "Toonies for Torches", which enables Scotiabank clients to purchase a paper torch in support of Special Olympics Manitoba.  Funds raised up to $15,000 in the Toonies for Torches campaign, were matched by Scotiabank. Last year, this resulted in a total of $30,473 to support Special Olympics programs throughout the province.
Each year, Manitoba law enforcement personnel from across the Province take to the city streets and rural highways to participate in the Torch Run. The ultimate goal of the LETR is to ensure that all residents living with an intellectual disability are provided with the opportunity to share in the benefits of participating in sports and related physical activities.

Over the past 23 years the Manitoba LETR has consistently achieved their goal, raising in excess of 2 million dollars, due in large part to the generous support of runner pledges and Manitoba LETR variety of activities. One hundred percent of all monies raised through LETR fundraising campaigns such as this go directly to Special Olympics Manitoba.
